MutliMedia Industry in the Philippines

State of Multimedia Industry in the Philippines

Multimedia is the use of several different media (e.g. text, audio, graphics, animation, video) to convey information. Multimedia also refers to the use of computer technology to create, store, and experience multimedia content.(wikepedia)

Inspite of a huge explosion of tremendous experiences brought by unsual force and inward force of the people in the Philippines, we are still hoping for a new change, a change hand by the trend of information technology. Fortunately, Philippines was able to show-up the victory in the field of multimedia Industry such as joining contest who apparently won and at thesame time able to compete globally, Filipinos web master development, using high tech cellular phones, gadgets and also able to produce video film animation series, comic animated and many others. These evidences are just a leeway because there are more than events that will prove that Philippines reach the peak of Multimedia Industry. I cited some of the article that will surely make us Filipinos proud and it will give you an inspiration to pursue your career on what ever it is,especialy when it comes to Information Technology.ImagineCup is an annual competition highlighting student’s multimedia skills. Apart from the web and software development categories, there are also the office designer invitational, the algorithm invitational, short film and rendering categories, business plan development, IT and visual gaming. (ImagineCup)Furthermore, schools all over the Philippines are working hand in hand to the students to become more attentively when it comes to technology.Web master, university professors and multimedia company assured that when it comes to technology they can hit and compete all over the world.

Article 1: Mobile industry body says 3Gentry 'a matter of timing'

THE TECHNOLOGY is here but it's just a matter of timing before local operators begin offering third generation (3G) mobile services in the Philippines, a top official of an international body said.

3G refers to a set of mobile communications standards that allow data speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second and can accommodate bandwidth-consuming wireless video transmissions. This means more interactive experiences using the mobile phone.

"It is really not a question of how but when. The Philippines has great potential. It has proven how it was able to develop a business case out of non-voice mobile services," said Marko Tiesmaki, vice president of the Global Mobile Suppliers Association and chair of GSA Asia Pacific chapter in an interview with reporters.
Tiesmaki cited how the Philippines' success story in short messaging system (SMS)-based services has placed the country in a position to lead in the next revolutionary step in messaging services: multimedia messaging.

"The Philippines is a good example for deploying advanced use of SMS," the executive added. Tiesmaki said that one key success factor for 3G services involves creating the value-added services that consumers would buy. It is not about technology, he said.

But the introduction of more camera phones, multimedia messaging services, Java-based applications and richer browsing experiences in today's mobile services is gradually preparing consumers for 3G services, he added.

According to a study by research firm International Data Corp., 3G would become widely used by 2007.

Among the countries leading in the race to deliver 3G services are Japan and Korea, the study said.

"Times have changed over the past six months. People now see a business case in 3G services. Most operators now have careful optimism attitude toward 3G. It is just a matter of timing before they start deploying such services," Tiesmaki said.

In Asia Pacific, countries that have bid out 3G licenses to operators include Singapore, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Philippine government, through the National Telecommunications Commission, has been drafting guidelines related to 3G services. The guidelines included rules on how certain radio frequencies would be bid out to local carriers.

Two years ago, the NTC noted that there could only be three players that would be allowed to offer 3G services. NTC eventually created a working group to study policies related to 3G services in the Philippines.

Article 2: Animation, Computer Game and Comic Book Design

Perhaps this is an obscure concern to most in educational circles in Metro Manila, but these are the areas "where the money is". As was stated in the UE-FRASI forum, the Philippines has historically served as an offshore "sweatshop" for the animation houses of Hollywood and Tokyo. It is the assertion of the author that the Philippines can produce world-class animation for exportation to TV markets in the West, especially now with the advent of computer tools not available just a few years ago. With English language and a keen understanding of American if not Western culture, Filipino animators and game designers have a distinct advantage over other ASEAN countries when it comes to being able to exploit this field of media production. Animation and computer game design and production call upon a multiplicity of skills from scriptwriting and drawing skills to computer language programming and music/sound effects composition. Schools responding to this call in the survey included National Polytechnic Institute, UE-Caloocan and Manila, and FE's Institute of Architecture and Fine Arts. Ms. Margarita "Midge" K. Manlapig, a guest speaker at the UE-FRASI forum made it abundantly clear that there is a future in the Philippines for animation, and schools should begin rethinking their curricular offerings in light of these potentials. Schools that are able to offer rigorous courses within this realm will attract industry funding and support in many forms such as software and hardware work stations. This is what the Silicon Graphics-level of companies are doing with institutions offering programs in 3-D modeling and animation in the U.S., for example.
